@micahcraig @ReporterLeslie Looks like a monk parakeet, colonies of which live in Bklyn. Haven’t heard of them in Gowanus before. Anyone?
@micahcraig @ReporterLeslie I’ve seen them in Gowanus outside the Children’s School. A whole tree full.
@Wildlife_of_NYC @ReporterLeslie @micahcraig I saw one of these birds a couple yrs ago in #ParkSlope R they able to overwinter this climate?
@micahcraig @HWigglebutt that is a Quaker Parrot. Banned in some states because they adapt & form colonies. Could you coax him inside?
@micahcraig @HWigglebutt however if you look closely at the picture the wings may have been previously trimmed, just growing out now.
@micahcraig @HWigglebutt if you see him again open window. Don’t let him see a box. Use seeds or nuts to lure him. Put nuts on window sill.
@Sunshine_Nadia @ReporterLeslie @micahcraig Apparently, yes! They’ve been in the city for decades & have colonies in all 5 boroughs.
@Wildlife_of_NYC @ReporterLeslie @micahcraig I guess global warming favors tropical parrots taking up residence in NYC!
.@Wildlife_of_NYC @Sunshine_Nadia @ReporterLeslie @micahcraig There is a flock that flies up MalcomX in Harlem every day..
@ehekkala @Wildlife_of_NYC @ReporterLeslie @micahcraig oooo, sounds beautiful! I’m coming up to take a look 😉
@ehekkala @Sunshine_Nadia @ReporterLeslie @micahcraig No kidding! At what cross street & what time do you see the flock? I want to see!
.@Sunshine_Nadia @Wildlife_of_NYC @ReporterLeslie @micahcraig Not tropical. Temperate, cold-adapted. http://t.co/wzvmG9rtUP
@ehekkala @Wildlife_of_NYC @Sunshine_Nadia @ReporterLeslie @micahcraig huge flock lives in greenwood cemetery, see them in park slope a lot
@ehekkala @Wildlife_of_NYC @Sunshine_Nadia @ReporterLeslie @micahcraig you can go any day of the week and see dozens at the cemetery!
@ehekkala @Wildlife_of_NYC @Sunshine_Nadia @ReporterLeslie @micahcraig nests (only parrot that builds communal nest) at greenwood are huge!
@Sara_and_Snakes @ehekkala @Sunshine_Nadia @ReporterLeslie @micahcraig Bklyn parakeets in post from @backyardbeyond http://t.co/n9enxvm2Fo
